What is economic abuse?
Economic abuse is a form of domestic abuse in which a partner or ex-partner controls, sabotages or exploits your financial resources. The purpose of economic abuse is to diminish the financial resources and confidence of the victim-survivor and make them entirely dependent on the perpetrator - creating a direct barrier to safety and separation and potential long-term financial insecurity.
Who should care about economic abuse?
The short answer is all of us.
Economic abuse can affect anyone regardless of gender, age, socio-economic background, sexual orientation, religion or ethnicity. It is perpetrated by partners or ex-partners and can involve a variety of systems and institutions.
To recognise and respond effectively, a whole-systems response is required. This includes but is not limited to responses from: specialist domestic abuse services, legal, housing, immigration, banking, education, debt advice, transport and utilities.
